For those of you that do have that someone special to come home to, you know the feeling I’m talking about. Or maybe you have more than one “someone special” to come home to. That someone who jumps every time you breathe, cough, or move, and is so excited to greet you they could possibly pee themselves – but hey, it happens. Someone who unconditionally and affectionately gives you attention at the moments you need it most. The moments when no one else is there.
Maybe you thought of your family, boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, or wife as that someone special. And yes, those people have great meaning in your life and can give you that unconditional love you desire. But for others, it’s that furry special someone. The one who, no matter what, appreciates and loves you with all their soul can give. No matter if you’re sad, angry, or frustrated, they still think of you as the worlds greatest human being to ever live. No matter your mental or physical state, they think you’re the most beautiful human being to ever live.
I recently adopted a toy poodle, who is now 7 months old. A boy. He is apricot colored and weighs a whopping 6.7 lbs. The size of his little body but big personality sparks joy in my life each day. I love how he recognizes when I’m distressed or anxious about something and offers his affection without hesitation almost instantly. Maybe you disagree that dogs have feelings, but I think they do, and living with Theo has truly shown me that. I often tell my friends and mom, “I don’t think I’ve ever loved anything so much in my life.” And that’s absolutely true. And I know Theo feels the same way.
The photo below is the day I picked Theo up. He was only 1.5 lbs and I barley knew how to hold him properly. I was so scared he could be hurt any second and made sure he was safely near me at all times until he got a little bigger. The kind old lady named Dru who sold him to me had him waiting outside in a gated white fence. As soon as she opened the little fenced white door, I knew I had found my best friend for life. When we got into the car to bring him home, he immediately stared straight into my eyes and I looked into his. Again, I had never loved anything more in my life. From that moment on, he knew, and I knew, that we were going to be each other’s best friend.

You may think I sound a bit intense about this, and you should know I have people in my life who make me feel the same way, but a little, sassy fur ball makes me feel just as loved as any human could. Theo has lifted my mood when no one else in the world could. He has understood my feelings more than any human could in times when mentally I’m not well. He’s sat on my lap for hours while studying for miserable physiology exams. He’s walked, ate, lived, and even showered with me (trust me, your dog will love you even more if you let them hop in with you for just a few minutes).
My point to you, is that sometimes your most loyal friend can be 6.7 lbs and have a tail. Or bigger, dogs of any size are a blessing. You don’t have to worry about feeling foolish, judged, or be hesitant to express your feelings. Instead, you can be free. Free to cry or laugh with a companion by your side.
If you have the time and money for a pet in your life, I’d highly recommend it. I’d encourage you to take upon a relationship with your pet as if they are your best friend, and they will be your best friend right back.
If you have questions or want to know more about Theo, message me and I will kindly answer. If you have questions about what life is like living with a pet, or are curious about what’s it like to train and live with a puppy, reach out to me. I hope you can find that someone special, as I found Theo.
All the best,
Natalie
